The Communion of Poetry

poetry reading
Poetry is for me Eucharistic. You take someone else’s suffering into your body, their passion comes into your body, and in doing that you commune, you take communion, you make a community with others.
Mary Karr

Quote: Vocation

Cuvier-1769-1832

“‘Come,’ said the Lord. ‘I will make a covenant between Me and you. I, I will not measure you out any more distress than you need to write your books… But you are to write the books. For it is I who want them written. Not the public, not by any means the critics, but Me, Me!’
‘Can I be certain of that?’ asked Charlie.
‘Not always,’ said the Lord.”

Quote: Love & Suffering

Leonid Pasternak - The Passion of creation

“By doing anything that you fundamentally love to do, you are going to suffer for it too; it is going to be painful at times. Love is like that – it is not just a wonderful thing, it is demanding.”
Graham Swift
