In other – if less exciting – news, my back garden researches indicate that green peas produce white flowers and purple peas produce mauve flowers. Taste tests will have to wait until the flowers fulfill their destiny and produce pods.

Next year, I may try Tetragonolobus purpureus, which sounds like some sort of eccentric Roman emperor, but is more prosaically known as the asparagus pea. Kings Seeds describe it as “a fast-growing plant that grows like clover and will smother weeds.” (Come to my arms!) Pea-ish flowers (red, this time) go on to produce tasty little inch-long pods, “said by gourmets to combine the flavour of both Peas and Asparagus.” Yum.
