What’s the first book you remember reading?
I still remember the day I started reading: I took the book off the nice lady at the kindy mid-read and told her that I could read it myself. The page, as I recall, was a billowy dark grey, a picture of a storm, perhaps. What the book was, alas, I no longer remember.
What about you?
I don’t know what I first read – probably something bought for my older sister when I was three, which showed me what reading was.
My first ‘reading’ was recitations of books regularly read to me. They were clearly non-fiction works, one on homelessness [The Puppy That Found A Home] and the other on early social media [Mailman Mike]. There followed the precursor of TV Cooking Shows, albeit gender-skewed [Suzie’s New Stove] and the book version of a Reality TV show [Teddy The Terrier] which was illustrated with photos of real dogs dressed in human clothes and doing human activities. My first school reading book was a set of stories including a version of the Billy Goats Gruff, and soon afterwards a much beloved book containing the tale of Tishy Mouse (I now own a battered copy found in a second hand shop). Good times!
Early social media. Heh heh.
I don’t remember what I first read, but I remember being informed on multiple occasions by the lapuns that when I read out loud to them, as I first learned how to, that you used to correct me from the next room, with no copy of your own.
Only because you were re-reading them. There are advantages to being the second child, after all.
I don’t remember the book, but I clearly remember finding the voice in my head – you know, the one you use to read silently to yourself. We were in temporary housing, I was sitting with my legs stretched out in front of me on the top bunk. I remember listening to myself with a kind of awe as I turned the pages.
I was somewhere between five and eight years old, I believe.
“a kind of awe” – I love it! It’s always that way when you start doing something you didn’t know how to do, isn’t it?
