Or have you ever been? A personal question, to be sure, but it is possible to be addicted to substances that are legal, even socially acceptable.
I myself was once addicted to what William Cowper called “the cups that cheer, but not inebriate,” i.e. tea.
And you? (Fear not: the Internet will provide you with a thin veneer of anonymity.)
I used to be a reading addict – socially acceptable perhaps, but time consuming. Even as I was drawing to the end of one story I would be anticipating the next.

Question: does a reading addict need bigger and bigger hits to get the same effect? Does this explain Moby-Dick?
I used to be addicted to coffee … I realized I needed it every morning, so I gave it up. Now I drink it around 12 pm to keep me awake in the sluggish afternoon, though not every day … today I didn’t, for example (although my work offers a dozen different kinds for free, so it’s very difficult to resist).
I’m also addicted to a video game called Town of Salem. It’s my favorite thing to do in my free time along with reading. Is a reading addiction bad? I guess it depends if it ruins the other parts of your life! So far, it hasn’t — I don’t think!
Your reading addiction can’t be that bad, if you still have room for a game addiction. And vice versa 🙂
